What’s the difference between ‘testing’ and a ‘portfolio’?

‘Model testing’ can mean many things to many people, but for me it means shooting with a model with little-to-no-makeup (other than some mascara, lip gloss and brushed eyebrows), to show her (or his) best features with minimal distractions, in an interesting way.

This is important because it shows clients (and model agents) what you look like (your face, skin and body) with little to no makeup, and minimal editing other than a few pimples removed and a couple of quick adjustments on the computer. It’s very raw, but still very beautiful, in fact it’s my favourite kind of photoshoot. To me, there is something inspiring and liberating to see a model’s face light up, when the see an image that they love, straight out of the camera.

Often ‘model testing’ can lead to very strong beauty editorial images. A high proportion of beauty editorial images that you seen in magazines, will have started out as a model test, and ‘graded’ for a magazine aesthetic.

Model Testing Examples

The clothes in model testing is very simple and timeless. Blacks, whites, greys, flat colours, and garment cuts that show lots of shoulders, arms and collarbones. The skin looks natural and dewy, and the hair is messy and undone.

Editorial Examples

An editorial portfolio features you in a magazine-style story telling scenario. It can be focussed on your skin (beauty) and/or your body and the clothes (fashion). A team is used to create these looks. Photography, Hair, Makeup, Styling, and retouching is very important in getting a strong result. We don’t need to shoot a full editorial for your portfolio, just a few strong hero images.

Styled Fashion

Editorial Beauty

Many of these images started as a model test, but have been graded by a high end retoucher for magazine aesthetic. This option is always open to my clients as well.

Commercial Swimwear

Commercial swimwear images are warm, bright and vibrant. They are the kinds you will see in shopping centre windows, and always require my having at least one assistant on location, and retouching to achieve this aesthetic, hence the increase in package price.

What gap does this service fill?

This offering is for models that just want the best with a proven photographer and team, that works with agency models all the time - on both agency model portfolios and on actual client campaigns.

If I was a model starting out, I would look to shoot with the best 3 fashion photographers that I could afford - I could even recommend them.

What kinds of images can I expect?

If you select the right package (based on your needs) and prep well, you'll get premium images just like you see on my website. Quality tend to go awry when models use the wrong hair makeup artists, poor choice in styling, or excessive use of fake tan.

What model agencies do have a relationships with?

I have great working relationships with the bookers at IMG, Viviens, Chic, Scoop, Priscillas, Kult, The.Mgmt, Que, Busy, PSEG and probably a few more that I’ve missed.

Photographer Adjusted vs. High End Retouching.

The images that are delivered to you straight from the camera should 'wow' you. The truth is, there are people in my team, that can make your images glow even more.  It's really up to you, based on your budget.

What clients are saying.

Simply put, Dave is a fantastic operator. His proven experience coupled with a strong commercial understanding positions him so well to deliver imagery and campaigns to an exceptional standard. He is great to work with, asks the right questions and goes above and beyond. Dave is highly adaptable and can deliver on such a wide range of briefs and projects – he just gets it. I would highly recommend Dave, and his work.

  5. Other artists (eg. Hair-Makeup, Stylists) are to be paid directly subject to their terms.
